MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL AWARDED LITHUANIAN DIPLOMACY STAR BY AMBASSADOR ZYGIMANTAS PAVILIONIS
Today Mayor Rahm Emanuel was awarded the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star by Lithuanian Ambassador to the United States, Zygimantas Pavilionis. Mayor Emanuel was given the honor for Chicago’s work in developing and deepening bilateral ties between the Republic of Lithuania and the United States and fostering historical memory. The Diplomacy Star is the medal of honor of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is awarded for the merits promoting the name of Lithuania.
“I welcome Ambassador Pavilionis to Chicago and I am honored to accept the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star on behalf of all Chicagoans, but particularly on behalf of all our Lithuanian residents here the city of Chicago,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Chicago is home to a strong and vibrant Lithuanian population and we are pleased to commemorate the 20th anniversary of our Sister City relationship with Vilnius this year.”
On February 13, 2013 Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago City Council honored the 20th Anniversary of the sister city relationship between Vilnius and Chicago with a proclamation during City Council. The City of Vilnius reciprocated by passing a resolution honoring the anniversary. The City of Vilnius also named a street after Chicago to honor the anniversary. Chicago and Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, have been Sister Cities since 1993.
Nicknamed “Little Lithuania,” Chicago is home to the most people of Lithuanian descent anywhere in the world outside of Lithuania.
