Juyeon Kim will display 9″x9″ ceramic tiles featuring hundreds of human images at Prak Sis July SOLO. These subtly disturbing images, which include a nude woman urinating, a 6th grader being bullied, and a group of soldiers carrying a wounded comrade, will elicit a range of human emotions and experiences. The exhibition displays high art version of ‘white bathroom’ installation created through a three months artist residency at John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin.

Juyeon has been inspired to make Untitled ceramic tiles since 2007, impelled by memories of time spent taking care of her dying mother in a South Korean hospital in 1999. During this time, Kim became aware of the silence of taboos surrounding public discussion of adversities that so often befall individuals. In Korean Buddhism, such hardships could be exorcised through the simple ritual of bowing at a temple; Kim wishes for her show to afford a similar space for finding their inner self.

JuYeon Kim works and lives in Brooklyn, NY. Kim has shown in both solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including NY, Washington DC, Atlanta, Shanghai, Dubai, and Seoul. She has been awarded several prestigious residencies such as The MacDowell Colony, Triangle Artists’ Residency Program, and the Roswell Art in Residence Fellowship. Kim has also held several positions as a visiting artist and professor.
